Wed, 12 Nov 2008 15:00 News from Burton Plantation Sunday 2nd November couldn’t have been more different than the first Sunday in November 2007 when we basked in sunshine. Despite the grey skies, saturated ground and prolonged drizzle 5 volunteers tacked a number of jobs in the plantation with great enthusiasm. It was noted that many of the trees and hedgerow shrubs that were planted last winter are thriving and it was pleasing to see the level in the ponds has risen. We are hoping conditions will be better on 19th November when we have some student volunteers coming from Loughborough University to help with seasonal maintenance. If this session is successful they may be able to offer help on several Wednesday afternoons throughout the winter months. A grant received from 02 should enable more work to be carried out on the paths to improve their accessibility and this will take place later in November. Do One Thing – Plant a tree An opportunity for adults and children to have some fun together helping to Do One Thing for nature in the community woodland in Burton on the Wolds. Last year we received a grant from BBC Breathing Places Project. This year the BBC is encouraging partner groups to run a ‘Do One Thing’ event to bring people closer to nature on their doorstep. Our tree planting day, following National Tree Week is the ideal time for such an event. In addition to planting some trees there will be an activity for children and a competition If you wish to take part come to the Plantation, next to the Playing Field on Towles Field, on Sunday 7th December between either 10 am and 12 noon or 1.30 and 3.30 pm. If you can bring your own spade it would be helpful but not essential. You will have the opportunity to plant a tree and explore the woodland, enter the competition and have a look at the new pavilion extension. Refreshments in the form of hot and cold drinks, biscuits, and as a seasonal touch, sherry and mince pies will be provided free to all volunteers and Friends of Burton Plantation who want to join the fun and see what is happening. For more information phone Catherine Thomson 01509 881529 Friends of Burton Plantation The ’Friends’ scheme gives people the opportunity to support Burton’s community woodland. Not everyone is able to take part in the volunteer days but many wish to see the woodland managed in a sustainable way that preserves the natural habitat whilst providing a valuable local amenity. To become a Friend of Burton Plantation, requires a minimum donation of £5 per household. Last years donations were used to fund next boxes and bat boxes. As a Friend of the Plantation you will receive a free pack of plantation notelets and be welcomed to any of our volunteer days and special events such as the Do One Thing Day. Sarah Best — Parish Clerk Mon, 11 Feb 2008 14:14 Help for Heroes The Parish Council have received the letter below asking for support. If you wish to sponser Colin McDermott please contact him direct on colinmcdermott@hotmail.com To the Parish Council, I am writing to you as I am a Burton-on the-Wolds resident and I am currently attempting to raise money for ‘Help for Heroes’. ‘Help For Heroes’ is a Charity providing practical, direct support for those servicemen and women wounded in the line of duty in either of the two conflicts within Iraq or Afghanistan. Money is urgently needed to help build a gymnasium and full size swimming pool at the Tri-Service Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court in Surrey. Help for heroes have recruited 300 volunteers to undertake a 342 mile road bike ride along the Normandy Coast in France, visiting La Harve, Dieppe, Amiens, Somme, Arras and Calais. The ride will begin on May 26th 2008 in Portsmouth, before crossing to the beaches of Normandy. Upon our arrival in Calais some 7 days later, we will cross to Dover and travel by coach to London where we will join with other riders to ride through the capital to the Cenotaph. I am one of the individuals volunteering for this groundbreaking bike ride. Each rider has pledged to raise a minimum of £2000 in aid of Help for Heroes. The charity aim to raise money to show our servicemen and women that we have not forgotten them or the sacrifices that are being made. Take the politics away and think of those young men and women who are being wounded in the course of serving their country. I am writing to ask if you would be prepared to sponsor my participation in this event. I am well known in the village having worked at the local school for the past 4 years. I also helped to set up and was the Chair of the Youth Club for 2 years. I was also the Lollypop man and have also been on the Cricket Club committee and the PTA. I feel I have supported and still do support our village. Fly Tipping has been rife in parts of Burton on the Wolds this year, with hedge cuttings and grass clippings being left on verges and in hedges in Sowters Lane. Please dispose of your garden waste properly. Fly tipping is not only unsightly, smelly and unhygienic but also adds a cost to the local landowner when cleared. Dog Waste is again becoming a problem in Burton on the Wolds, especially in the Jitty between Springfield Close and Barrow Road. Please clean up after your dog. Use the dog waste bins if nearby or take it home, a £50 on the spot fine can be given to anyone not cleaning up after their dog. The Dog Warden will be visiting soon.
