This exercise involved using the voting handsets to gain people’s view on what they thought was most important and most worthy of investment. The choices were based on Leicestershire’s Sustainable Community Strategy, the overarching strategy for all public sector organisations in the County. The consultation was also conducted with the Citizens Panel and Leicestershire Together Forum. In total approximately 850 people have been directly engaged in this exercise. More » The key finding from the consultation is that making Leicestershire a safe and attractive place to live and work was seen as the most important area for investment. To make that happen tackling anti-social behaviour and disorder should be prioritised. Sarah Best — Parish Clerk Mon, 16 Feb 2009 20:02 News from Burton Plantation Burton Plantation Every first Sunday of the month over the winter, there has been a loyal band of volunteers working in the woodland by the playing field in Burton. December’s “Do one thing for Nature” day when the focus was on tree planting and thanking our volunteers was the best attended yet. Over 100 hawthorn whips, donated by Leicestershire CC Tree Warden scheme and 40 other native species hedge trees donated by the Woodland Trust were planted. An extensive litter pick took place then our workers had the opportunity to relax and celebrate Christmas with refreshments provided by a small award from Voluntary Action Charnwood given specifically to reward volunteers. More » January’s volunteers had a busy time making log piles as habitats for small mammals and amphibians. Some new nest boxes were put up, one donated in memoriam, the others bought with donations from Friends of Burton of Burton Plantation. Between the volunteer days a local woodsman Neil Hunter has done more maintenance, taking out some of the dead and diseased trees that are too close to the paths. It is not desirable to take out all dead wood, as it provides an important habitat. Many of you will have seen or more likely heard the woodpeckers at work on dead tree trunks. On February’s volunteer day 11 people kept warm collecting up the brash from the felled trees and stacking it in piles, ready for chipping in March. The chippings will be put on the paths making them safer to walk on and therefore encouraging people to stay on the paths and avoid damaging the adjacent vegetation, particularly the emerging bluebells. On the subject of paths, in autumn 2008 the Plantation received an award from O2, “Its your Community” This money was given specifically to improve paths, hence the work you will have seen bridging the ditches. The final phase of this project is taking place now. The path next to the school fence at the end of the pond, is being stepped and stabilised. On completion should provide a drier, safer alternative route to walk to the playground, playing field and school from Springfield Close. Its not too late to join in this winter’s activity in the woods. There are two more volunteer days, Sunday 1st March and Sunday 5th April. There will be someone to show you what is required at the sports pavilion at the Playing Field on Towles Field from 10am until 3pm on both days, No experience is necessary, gloves and tools are provided, as are refreshments. Why not give it a go for an hour? If you feel like a walk, visit the plantation and admire the snowdrops before they finish. For more information about the volunteer days please phone Catherine Thomson 07887 996293. Wed, 12 Nov 2008 15:00 News from Burton Plantation Sunday 2nd November couldn’t have been more different than the first Sunday in November 2007 when we basked in sunshine. Despite the grey skies, saturated ground and prolonged drizzle 5 volunteers tacked a number of jobs in the plantation with great enthusiasm. It was noted that many of the trees and hedgerow shrubs that were planted last winter are thriving and it was pleasing to see the level in the ponds has risen. We are hoping conditions will be better on 19th November when we have some student volunteers coming from Loughborough University to help with seasonal maintenance. If this session is successful they may be able to offer help on several Wednesday afternoons throughout the winter months. More » A grant received from 02 should enable more work to be carried out on the paths to improve their accessibility and this will take place later in November. If you can bring your own spade it would be helpful but not essential. You will have the opportunity to plant a tree and explore the woodland, enter the competition and have a look at the new pavilion extension. Refreshments in the form of hot and cold drinks, biscuits, and as a seasonal touch, sherry and mince pies will be provided free to all volunteers and Friends of Burton Plantation who want to join the fun and see what is happening. For more information phone Catherine Thomson 01509 881529 Friends of Burton Plantation The ’Friends’ scheme gives people the opportunity to support Burton’s community woodland.
